Alexandria FAQ
Buying, selling & renting in Alexandria
What’s the difference between the City of Alexandria and an Alexandria mailing address?
The City of Alexandria (including Old Town and Del Ray) is an independent city. Many homes with an “Alexandria” mailing address — like Kingstowne or Mount Vernon — are actually in Fairfax County. This affects taxes and schools, and I’ll make sure you know which applies to any home.
How easy is it to commute from Alexandria?
Very convenient. Alexandria has several Metro stations on the Blue and Yellow lines, Amtrak and VRE at Alexandria Union Station, and quick access to I-395, I-495 and the George Washington Parkway.
Do historic homes in Old Town have special rules?
Yes. Exterior changes to homes in Alexandria’s historic districts generally require review by the city’s Board of Architectural Review. I’ll help you understand what that means before you buy.
